The pattern is always the same: the equipment is available and the qualified person is not. Vacation coverage during the busiest two weeks, an injury, a second crew running for a month, a machine bought before anyone was trained on it, or a certification that lapsed and cannot be renewed this week.

It also covers growth. A company adding a second crane crew needs an operator before it can justify a permanent hire, and hiring by the day while the work proves itself is how that risk gets managed.

Name the machine in the posting: type, make, model, capacity, and any unusual controls or attachments. Competence is machine-specific, and an operator excellent on a knuckleboom may never have run a stick crane. A generic posting gets generic applicants.

Ask what else they have run and for how long, and be specific about the conditions — a crane operator used to open construction sites is not automatically comfortable picking over a house with a climber setting the picks.

For anything with a lifting chart, ask how they would approach a pick at your typical radius. The answer tells you quickly whether they read charts or work by feel.

This is the one service where the equipment risk sits with you, so the paperwork matters more than usual. Confirm your policy covers a hired operator on that machine, and see the evidence of competence rather than accepting the claim.

Certification requirements vary by machine class and jurisdiction. Cranes in particular have formal operator certification in many places, and using an uncertified operator can invalidate cover regardless of how well the day goes.

Transport is a separate question. Operating a machine and being licensed to haul it are different qualifications, so if the equipment has to move between sites, either confirm the operator can legally move it or post a CDL driver as a second service.

Rates are agreed directly with the provider before the first day.

Post the job naming the machine and the dates, and set the crew size to the number of operators you need. Operators whose service radius covers you are alerted right away, and their profiles list the machine classes they are qualified and comfortable on.

If the same job needs a driver, ground crew or a second machine, post each as its own service — they fill independently, so one unavailable operator does not hold up the rest of the crew.
